In the quest for a greener future, the concept of carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as a controversial strategy. With billions of pounds at stake, the new prime minister faces a critical decision: to continue down a potentially disastrous path or to rethink our approach to tackling climate change.

This figure, divided between public and private sectors, raises concerns about the burden on taxpayers and energy consumers. Misleading Claims and Limited Impact

Oil giants like Equinor, BP, and ExxonMobil have been actively pushing for CCS, knowing it's their lifeline to continue burning gas. The program, shaped by industry interests, aims to meet climate budgets while allowing the continued use of fossil fuels. As the Climate Change Committee admits, gas with CCS remains a significant part of the UK's fossil fuel demand in 2050.
Scientific Credibility in Question
The scientific foundation of CCS as a climate solution has been influenced by none other than BP. Investigative work has revealed that BP played a crucial role in financing and steering one of the most influential climate papers, the "Wedges" paper. This paper, which became a cornerstone of global government policy, oversold CCS and presented it as an established technology, despite its limited testing and implementation.
A History of Failed Attempts
The UK's experience with CCS is a cautionary tale. Previous attempts, including the Peterhead plan, a demonstration project, and a funding competition, have all been abandoned due to cost escalations and feasibility issues.
